Dr Mostafa Mahdy, PhD, is a post-doctoral research fellow studying renewable energy spatial siting within the Energy and Climate Change Division, University of Southampton. He has granted his Doctoral of Philosophy in Civil Engineering. His PhD thesis assessed the offshore wind energy potential in the Middle East, using UK’s offshore wind previous projects as a knowledge base for his spatial siting methodology.  He is interested in various applications of multi criteria decision-making (MCDM) and GIS applications, especially spatial sitting problems.

Research Interests

  • Renewable Energy Spatial Siting
  • Offshore Wind Energy
  • Multi-Criteria Decision Analysis (MCDA)

Research Projects

Offshore wind Spatial Siting: This research addresses wind energy potential with a particular focus in the Middle East, where there is a paucity of information around the resource, its locations and infrastructure needs. This seminal research is based on the development of new, more accurate estimates of available resources and predicted energy yields, taking into account appropriate constraints such as shipping lanes, nature reserves, electrical grid etc, presenting the first mapping of the potential for offshore wind energy in the region.

Green City Performance Tracker: This project has developed a robust assessment tool (Performance Tracker) for Southampton City Council’s Green City Charter (GCC) to help the City in its transition towards zero carbon. The Tracker will enable an organisation to assess and quantify their present and future development in achieving their committed sustainability targets under the five GCC themes. It is also an educational tool not only showing investment opportunity but also highlighting where current data may be enhanced.

Solar Housing KSA: The research aims to investigate and provide evidence as to the role of solar energy systems in reducing electricity demand in residential buildings, contributing to Saudi Arabian low carbon pathway aspirations. The project will address peak demand shaving of air conditioning loads in domestic buildings and provide information to residents on energy efficiency measures.
