Mr Chris Kanani is a Civil Engineering graduate from the University of Southampton, who has been a researcher in Energy for Development (e4D) within the Energy and Climate Change Division (ECCD) since 2012.
On completion of his undergraduate degree, he joined the Sustainable Energy Research Group (SERG) as a research intern concerning data collection within the Community Based Initiatives in Energy Saving project.
In November 2012 he became a researcher on the group’s e4D project, where his work is currently on-going. His research is focused on rural electrification in sub-Saharan Africa through cooperative managed mini-grids, where he has made several trips to Africa to ensure the continued progress of the project. He is experienced in GIS modelling, resource assessment, needs assessment, technical design of PV mini-grids, deployment and implementation. He has project managed 6 mini-grid installations in Africa with a total installed capacity of over 80kWp, benefitting up to 15,000 people in the local communities. He has also presented his research at various international conferences including the ‘Development and Mini-grids in Rural Africa’ conference held in Nairobi, Kenya, 2015 and the ‘International Workshop on Sustainable Energy Ecosystems’ held in Cebu, Philippines 2016.
